2 Kings 19:25b-26 KJV
…now have I brought it to pass, that thou shouldest be to lay waste fenced cities into ruinous heaps.
[26] Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded; they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it be grown up.
Sometimes when good things come our way, we are tempted to think our efforts resulted in those glories. It is very easy to miss the Hand of God in these successes, especially when you know you put in a lot.
The King of Assyria, Sennacherib had destroyed many kingdoms. Until his encounter with Jerusalem, he probably never knew that God had used him as a tool all this while to bring judgement on some nations. Moreover, he was a pagan king, what would God want from Him?
Unfortunately for Sennacherib, he bit more than he could chew. His lack of knowledge of the source of his own successes, cost him a lot more than he could ever had asked for. I like the Message Bible’s version of this:
“Did it never occur to you that I am behind all this?… using you as a doomsday weapon…?”
It is a good feeling to bask in your personal achievements and take delight in the fact that you did it all. At least let it remain there, don’t take it out on the Supreme God who got you there without your permission or knowledge. He may turn you around by the nose when you least expect.
Have a blessed Friday.
