2 Kings 16:3-4 KJV
But he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, yea, and made his son to pass through the fire, according to the abominations of the heathen, whom the Lord cast out from before the children of Israel.
[4] And he sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
I’m reminded of a character in the Game of Thrones franchise called Shireen. She was the daughter of King Stannis Baratheon, yet was burnt alive at the stake by Melissandre, the priestess of the god of light. The princess’ father gave his consent.
Those scenes were not too pleasant, even though I knew it was only an act. Unlike images I remember from the old Joan of Arc movie, Shirleen’s screams and facial expression define how much she was tortured, all for the sake of power… power for her dad the king!
King Ahaz of Judah found himself culpable for this kind of worship. He had gone so low so far as God’s standards were concerned that he even had shrines under every tree. He did anything to hold on to power… absolutely anything… so brought down untold judgement on Judah.
It’s amazing what men would do to be powerful and hold on to power. You may not commit horrific practices, like child sacrifice, to gain power. But soon as you begin to do unthinkable things you know you otherwise wouldn’t have done, then you should know the path you are charting.
Have a blessed day.
