2 Samuel 20:1-2 KJV
And there happened to be there a man of Belial, whose name was Sheba, the son of Bichri, a Benjamite: and he blew a trumpet, and said, We have no part in David, neither have we inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to his tents, O Israel.
[2] So every man of Israel went up from after David, and followed Sheba the son of Bichri: but the men of Judah clave unto their king, from Jordan even to Jerusalem.
The people of Israel remind me much of the people of Rome in Shakespeare’s “MacBeth.”
How quickly they hailed Brutus, a conspirator in Caesar’s death, and yet hailed Mark Anthony in Caesar’s Defence, showed how fickle their minds were. It could change anytime!
If you’ve followed elections in Ghana, you may have noticed this trend too. Even in schools or churches, candidates are often surprised at the turn of events. When the very people they eat with, turn to deny them votes at the last minute.
King David had been through thick and thin with his people, but I believe at this stage things didn’t surprise him anymore. Right after Absalom’s revolt, another dude managed to steal the hearts of the people, while David was yet alive.
One key indicator of your maturity in the Lord is how to respond to people’s acceptance or otherwise of you or your leadership. People are NOT God!
They will always tend to surprise you, given the opportunity, so brace yourself for this so you can absorb the shock when surprises come your way.
Have a blessed day.
