And Asahel pursued after Abner; and in going he turned not to the right hand nor to the left from following Abner.
[20] Then Abner looked behind him, and said, Art thou Asahel? And he answered, I am.
[21] And Abner said to him, Turn thee aside to thy right hand or to thy left, and lay thee hold on one of the young men, and take thee his armour. But Asahel would not turn aside from following of him.
Just a few years ago, I remember how energetic I used to be. We could play football for long hours during the vacations. We hardly got tired. Mornings and evenings we were always present on the park.
Now I ask where all that strength has gone to. Playing for 30mins makes me pant like one fleeing for his life.
Youthfulness comes with its pros and cons and it takes a wise youth to perceive them.
Asahel, a much younger lad, wanted to make a name for himself so he took on the army commander of Saul’s army in battle. The experienced general warned him against such folly but he wouldn’t listen. He felt younger and very capable. The rest is history.
Your strengths, abilities, or talents do have their limits and you need to know them. Man, know thyself!
I pray for God to help us know when to carry on and when to call it quit.
