GOD-GIVEN NOT EARNED – Wed, Jan 10, 2018

Deuteronomy 9:6 KJV

Understand therefore, that the Lord thy God giveth thee not this good land to possess it for thy righteousness; for thou art a stiffnecked people.

It is very tempting and easy to attribute all that you acquire in life to your hard work and intelligence. Until you’ve come in contact with students who genuinely learn very very hard and yet never make good grades, you’d think passing is all about studying.

The original Jews who made the exodus from Egypt had all perished and this new breed were just about to take possession of the promised land. They must have believed their righteousness had merited them what their fathers couldn’t grasp.

Of course hardwork pays, so is living righteously and planning against failure. Yet Moses made one strong point (v6) that must guard our hearts in all our successes and achievements: We win because God makes us win… and not necessarily because of our hardwork!!!

This is what Paul the Apostle meant to teach, when he wrote in Ephesians 2:8 that we are saved by Grace and not by our works… so that none can boast of his own doings.
May we recognize that we are where we are, primarily because of Him and not our works.

Have a blessed day.
