Genesis 23:5-6 KJV

And the children of Heth answered Abraham, saying unto him,

[6] Hear us, my lord: thou art a mighty prince among us: in the choice of our sepulchres bury thy dead; none of us shall withhold from thee his sepulchre, but that thou mayest bury thy dead.

As I meditated on these verses, I was reminded of the 7 Corporal Works of Mercy. These are actions we need to perform as Christians, to extend God’s compassion and Mercy to those in need.

We are to:
1. Feed the hungry.
2. Give drink to the thirsty.
3. Clothe the naked.
4. Shelter the stranger/homeless.
5. Visit the sick.
6. Ransom/visit prisoners or captives
7. Bury the dead

I’m not sure the children of Heth, also called the Hittites, knew these by then, yet they were willing to help Abraham in the hard times, when he had just lost Sarah, his wife.

Jesus admonishes us to mourn with those who mourn. It’s sad to see people rather take advantage of the situation, inflicting all manner of financial burdens on those who mourn. Stop it, show mercy!
