Drink no longer water, but use a little wine for thy stomach’s sake and thine often infirmities.
I’ve always avoided arguments about whether it is right for Christians to drink at all or not. In fact, in a couple of such debates I’ve had people actually walk up to me to seek my opinion.
And in all such cases I’ve maintained the same stand. Indeed, the bible never preached abstinence when it comes to drinking of alcohol, but is very explicit on drunkenness. Overindulgence is definitely sinful.
This is why Paul would tell Timothy (on health grounds) not to drink only water but also a LITTLE wine, suggesting a measure that won’t get him intoxicated.
It is no sin to drink, but please do so in moderation, because we need you sober to reason with you… and more importantly, we need you alive.
