Luke 11:45-46 KJV
Then answered one of the lawyers, and said unto him, Master, thus saying thou reproachest us also.
[46] And he said, Woe unto you also, ye lawyers! for ye lade men with burdens grievous to be borne, and ye yourselves touch not the burdens with one of your fingers.
My mum and I visited a surgeon friend of hers, who had operated on me when I was very young. He had a whole bottle of liquor and a pack of cigarettes a the table in front of him.
After exchanging pleasantries and talking much about my health, my mum asked him when at all he was going to quit smoking and drinking. He only laughed and said, “if I’d have died, I’d have died long ago.
This surgeon’s posture reflects that of the teachers of the law in Jesus’ time. They’d recommend but won’t follow through themselves. No wonder Jesus couldn’t do away with the phrase, “Woe unto you…”
It is prudent to pen down rules/guidelines to help your group, society, family, church, etc. But by all means, abide by them yourself and do well not to make them burdensome.
Have a blessed day.
