Matthew 19:7-8 KJV
They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away?
[8] He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.
This is one of the moments Jesus is faced with a trick question that would rather differentiate Jesus’s doctrines from the Law. He came to perfect the Law not to condemn it (see Heb 7:19).
In his time, Moses was really stressed by the people each day. Bible tells us that before Jethro visited Moses and gave him good counsel, Moses engaged long queues of people. I want to believe that more than 70% of the time, their issues had to do with marriages.
In as much as Moses didn’t want it, Divorce, probably became the better option at the time. But a greater than Moses is here with us, which necessitates we revert to the original plan. It was not so from the beginning.
I pray that married couples who are having torrid times and whose marriages are vexed with a myriad of challenges will still find reason to stay together and keep hope alive.
Have a blessed day.
