1 Samuel 20:31 KJV
For as long as the son of Jesse liveth upon the ground, thou shalt not be established, nor thy kingdom. Wherefore now send and fetch him unto me, for he shall surely die.
I could understand Jonathan frustration and anger when he heard these words from his own father, confirming what David had been telling him all along.
Jonathan was put in a very tight corner in all of this. He loved David very much and yet he had to be seen to be obedient to his dad. That must have really been an uncomfortable position, yet Jonathan makes everything pan out just as the Lord desired, and David’s life was spared.
If your friend can be there for you and even promote your cause even though he can clearly see how threatening your existence is to his own aspirations, career or survival, then that is a true friend…dare I say, a brother.
This is a godly relationship and God desires us to foster such a one. 1 Peter 2:17 admonishes us to love the brotherhood and that is what Jonathan did.
It is my prayer that we’ll do well to keep our friendships (be it groups or individuals) well knit together and strive to do away with backbiting and unnecessary envy.
Have a blessed day.
