Numbers 3:11-12 KJV

And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying,

[12] And I, behold, I have taken the Levites from among the children of Israel instead of all the firstborn that openeth the matrix among the children of Israel: therefore the Levites shall be mine;

Technically, all the firstborn children of the stock of Israel belonged to the Lord, by ancient Jewish culture.

This practice was supposed to be a memorial of how the Lord spared their firstborns in Egypt on that Passover night.
But around this time of their journey in the wilderness, God needed men to work in the sanctuary. More men to handle the many tasks their daily worship required.

So as it were, God traded His ownership of the firstborns, for the Levites. All the sons of Levi would now be drafted into the Aaronic Order, instead of the firstborns, beginning what would be the Levitical Order.

The Priests and Levites together had been in direct service to God, till Jesus at Calvary, tore the veil for you and I to enjoy direct access. But how much of Him do you access each day even though you have ALL the privileges now.
To whom much is given, much is required.
