Judges 1:28 KJV
And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, and did not utterly drive them out.
Joshua had just passed on and just like his successor Moses, he sternly warned the Israelites not to turn away to foreign gods, just before exiting the scene.
So far as Joshua and Moses were concerned, this was the the only recipe for disaster, i.e. idolatry. But where were they to enforce this?
To ensure that idolatry does not happen, Israel was supposed to drive out all the other inhabitants of the land (Canaanites), but instead we see in the verse above that they chose to use the canaanites for forced labour, so did not utterly drive dem out of the land
It’s rather pathetic when we know what can kill us but choose to live with it. I like that scripture that says “can a man keep fire in his bossom without burning him?” – Pro 6:27
