VAIN TOILS – Wed, May 22, 2019

Ecclesiastes 2:18-19 KJV

Yea, I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave it unto the man that shall be after me.

[19] And who knoweth whether he shall be a wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun. This is also vanity.

I had a chat with the board chairman of our company some years ago and he tried to explain to me why it was better to cede part of the company to investors.

He cited many examples of Ghanaian companies he grew up knowing, but are no more. The owners of these companies toiled to set it up, only for their children and dependants to flush them down the drain a few years thereafter. There were succession plans in place but they turned out not to be good.

King Solomon saw a similar trend in his days, which breeded some sort of contempt in himself for his own toils. When we always look at the bigger picture, and see this life as a temporary place, a thorough-fare, our fears are subsided.

It is good to toil for a better life and strive for better conditions here, but we should never lose that focus of the hereafter, because that matters the most:
A place where no man can claim what is yours, where everything is meaningful not meaningless.

Have a blessed day.
