RESTRAIN SELF – Tue, May 14, 2019

Proverbs 25:28 KJV

He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.

Growing up, I have personally gone through a lot of struggles trying to bring my body under subjection. I believe one of the most difficult people to control are our own selves.

We make rules and choose certain values for ourselves, yet don’t have the will to see them through. I have a countless number of such, when I went against my own guidelines for living.

King Solomon himself wasn’t any less guilty. He knew very well the consequences of his actions. He wrote about them, yet didn’t guard against them.

We can’t win the war for self control on our own. Exercising self restraint in the long term is facilitated by the aid of the Holy Spirit. Call on Him each day for this grace. With Him, it is possible.

Have a blessed day.

Proverbs 19:4,7 KJV

Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour.

[7] All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him.

Poverty has a way of keeping one lonely. Very broke folks usually seem to have only broke friends, and judging from the words of Solomon, it looks like this didn’t start from our time.

Growing up, I knew a man who was popularly known as Believer in the neighbourhood. He drank a lot but also said a lot of “wise things,” or so I thought. One day, I asked my mum to explain one of Believer’s quotes to me but she quickly rubbished it and turned me away because she knew the source. But another time, I got some response from her when I pretended the source was my school teacher.

Poverty made nonsense of Believer’s quotable quotes. Of course, though some were nonsense, they’d have been tagged rather as ‘controversial’ if Believer was a man of substance and much wealth 😊. I’ve heard politicians say worse and yet get hailed.

I’m not a prosperity message preacher, but in my very young life, I’ve seen people gain acceptance just because of what they had. Make wealth if you can, it is able to facilitate kingdom business as well, aside giving you a voice.

Have a blessed day.

Proverbs 18:24 KJV

A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.

I can boldly say that I have some very good friends that I can count on, people who have stood by me irrespective of the situation. People who have come through for me when there was just no where else to look to. I’d have loved to write down their names here but can’t for obvious reasons.

For some of them, even though we never grew up in the same home, the kind of bonds we have formed over the years even amazes me. Selfless people who gave off their all at a point, just because they believed in your story. Yeah, I have and do benefit from such friendships.

The author of this book may also have had buddies who stuck up with him all the way, yet he spoke of a friend at another level, a friend who is even more than a brother. A friend whose interventions are almost impossible to describe.

Take time today to thank God for the gift of the Holy Spirit in our time. One we can even talk to when none else is closer; in our most anxious and alone moments, He still sticks and He wants you to be aware of this. So even in the loo He is still present. Raise your consciousness of Him daily, He is closer than close.

Have a blessed day.

CLEAN CRIB, NO INCREASE – Fri, May 03, 2019

Proverbs 14:4 KJV

Where no oxen are , the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox.

Just yesterday while listening to a radio programme, I heard of a lady who interviewed about 30 people for a position in her office but didn’t hire any because she felt none was qualified.

I found that to be strange too and agreed with the host, who thought probably that this interviewer may also need to re-check herself well in a mirror. The problem may not be the interviewees but the interviewer. If you find it hard to identify qualities in others but rather focus on their weaknesses you may end up working all alone.

I believe this what Solomon the wise sought to say in this proverb. Much abundance and harvest comes from the work of ox and cattle, but that means one may not have a clean crib/stable most of the time.

People usually come with their good and bad, and though it is hard to take in the bad most of the time, the good is there for our benefit and advancement. A good manager is one who is able to weave both sides of people to get the best of them. Jesus did good with Mary Magdalene, Peter and others. We can do same!

Have a blessed day. #TGIF

KEEPING IT TIGHT – Thu, May 02, 2019

Proverbs 13:3 KJV

He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction.

Early this morning, while I listened to a short exposition on why Zechariah was kept mute by God, delivered by a very popular man of God, I found a few points interesting.

The preacher argued that at his old age, there was no way Zechariah could have explained to his folks how Elizabeth got pregnant. For a long time he would have to defend himself and the family from an onslaught of questions he may never have answers to. So God zipped it up for him, to protect his family and the seed his wife was carrying.

Many ideas, that were pregnant with much promise, have been aborted and terminated at some point just because the carriers and those very close to them have not been tight lipped about them at the budding stages. There is a time to talk and a time to remain mute about a seed to carry.

I pray for a discerning spirit for each of us, to know when and whom to discuss certain issues with, so destruction will be far from us.

Have a blessed day.
